Yeast, mold, and mushrooms are all members of fungal family.  Fungus is a plant-like organism.  Fungus cannot manufacture its own food and must live on other organisms.  Fungus breaks down the dead body of other plants or animals and turns it into starch or sugar as its food. This process is called decomposition.

Decomposition provides the fungus with the energy necessary to survive and reproduce. Fungus reproduces by forming reproductive cells called spores. When the spores settle on a proper medium for their nutrition, they begin to grow on and decompose its medium.  If the medium is a dead body, the decomposition helps the recycling process of nature.

However, if the spores settle on and decompose a live body, the medium can become very ill.  The symptoms of this “live body decomposition” can range from head to toe.  For humans, for example, they include headaches, sinus congestion, strep throat, allergies, mind fog, depression, fatigue, arthritis-like aches and pain, fungal nails, athlete’s foot, eczema, etc.

Where are these spores from?  Because these spores are air-born, they can be from anywhere.  They can be in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the dust on furniture, raw food, etc.

What are the environmental factors ideal for the growth of these fungal spores (especially mold)?  Dampness, moisture, still air, no sunlight, warm temperatures (not extreme heat or cold), dust, etc. provide an incubation for fungus to grow.

Fungi have an extended family.  Yeasts belong to the fungus family which consists of at least 100,000 to 250,000 species.  They include yeasts, mold, mildew, rots, smuts and mushrooms.  The characteristic of fungi is the lack of chlorophyll.  Consequently, they cannot perform photosynthesis and are parasitic and saprophytic (feeding off dead organisms).

          The function of yeasts is to break down dead bodies so that organic matter can be turned into its basic elements of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus.  Without yeasts, we could be in serious trouble because dead bodies of animals and plants would just pile up.  We need yeasts to assist in the recycling of ecology.

          However, overgrowth of yeasts can also break down living organisms.  There are at least 20 to 30 different types of pathogenic yeasts which cause illnesses.  Candida is one member of the yeast family.  Candida albicans alone has 50 to 60 different strains which cause infections.  Consequently, it is no surprise that almost every individual in contemporary society suffers from yeast infections at one time or another, to a greater or lesser degree.
