Q.        I am 52 years old.  I did not have period for about a year.  All of a sudden, I had a good amount of period last month, then it stopped.  I am glad it did.  However, my menopausal symptoms had increased.  They include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, loss of sexual drive, weight gain, depression and extreme fatigue.  How much longer would I suffer from these symptoms?  Can you recommend holistic treatment for them?

A.        The symptoms you described are typical menopausal symptoms.  With proper treatment, these menopausal symptoms can be controlled.  Otherwise, they can linger for the rest of your life.  The following holistic treatment methods are most effective for menopause according to my clinical experience:

Allergies – Part 1

Studies show that half of the people in the world have allergies.  During the holiday season, allergy symptoms are particularly rampant.  Why is this?  Foods containing sugar, dairy, wheat, yeasts, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, chemicals, and allergens are more prominent during the holidays.  Stress is another cause for allergies.  When one indulges in yeast-favorite foods and are not managing stress well, the overgrowth of yeasts and parasites becomes inevitable.

Allergy Symptoms

Allergy symptoms can manifest from head to toe.  The following are common symptoms affecting people regardless of age, sex, or ethnicity:

Headaches:  Recurrent and frequent sinus or migraine headaches.

Mid-ear Infections:  Infants and children are very susceptible to mid-ear infections.  In most cases, they inherited the yeast disorder from their mother’s bloodstream or birth canal.  Perpetual mid-ear infections also cause Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).

Eye Problems:  Irritation of the eyes, burning and swelling of eyelids, dryness of eyes or decreased vision.

Sore Throat:  Recurrent and prolonged sore throat or tonsillitis and difficulty in swallowing.

Mouth Thrush: Especially common among people with AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) or ARC (AIDS Related Complex), or infants.

Respiratory system: Bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, tightness of chest, sinus infections, excessive mucus and post-nasal drip.

Digestive System:  Bloatedness in stomach and abdomen after eating, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, ulcerative colitis, cravings for sugar, cheese, bread, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol or drugs and inability to lose or gain weight regardless of the amount of food intake.

Immune System:  Susceptibility to colds, flu, and infections; extreme fatigue and low energy.

Cardiovascular System:  Sluggish blood circulation, palpitation, cold hands and feet and varicose veins.

Reproductive System:  Impotence, painful sexual intercourse, vaginal or prostate infections, PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome), vaginal itch, endometriosis and menstrual irregularities, and menopausal symptoms.

Elimination System:  Kidney or bladder infections, hemorrhoids, mucus in stools, anal itching and burning during urination.

Skin:  Acne, eczema, psoriasis, scaly skin, lesions, rashes, athlete’s foot, cellulite, inflammation of tips of fingers and toes, hair loss and brittle nails.

Endocrine System: Hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia and diabetes mellitus.

Muscular-skeletal System:  Aches and pains in muscles and joints, bursitis, stiff and swollen fingers, and recurrent pain in the neck, shoulders and back.

In addition to physical symptoms, the following mental/psychological symptoms can also be present:

Mental Concentration:  Poor memory and mental concentration, mind fog, drowsiness.

Depression:  Loss of interest in daily life activities and suicidal thoughts.

Mood Swings:  Anger, irritability, frustration and defensiveness.

Phobia:  Fear of motions such as in/on an elevator, escalator, airplane, train, bus or boat, or fear of moving crowds (agoraphobia or social phobia).

Anxiety Attacks:  Inability to handle daily chores, shortness of breath and panic.

Insomnia:  Inability to fall asleep or to sleep through the night.

 

Regardless of the symptoms, the treatment principles are basically the same:

1) stay on an anti-yeast nutritional program to prevent worsening of yeast infections.  

2) use strong Chinese herbal formulas to cleanse accumulated toxins

3) manage stress effectively

4) Release negative emotions such as anger, resentment, guilt, and regret.

Menopause is when you have not had a period (or even light spotting) for 12 consecutive months. The menopausal symptoms experienced by most women actually occur during pre- or peri-menopause period.

During the peri-menopause stage, three key hormones such estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone fluctuate, and mostly are on the decline.  Consequently, you may experience various symptoms.  The most common ones are hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, irritability, insomnia, irregular periods, loss of libido, painful intercourse, difficulty concentrating, itchy skin, headaches, bloating, gastro-intestinal disturbances (such as gas), weight gain, hair loss or thinning, light-headedness, depression and anxiety.

As your estrogen levels decline during pre-menopause,your vagina wall will become thinner and weaker. Consequently, it can be easily irritated during intercourse and leave tiny scars or cuts where bacteria and yeasts can flourish.  So, vaginal yeast infections become common symptoms associated with menopause.
