For every health problem, there is a natural solution!  The following are some natural, drug-free remedies for Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS):

1.  Yeast-Free Nutritional Approach:

As you can see, yeast disorders can exacerbate a lot of physical and emotional illnesses.   In the case of PMS, because of the particular tendency toward sugar cravings, it is of ultimate importance to stay on a yeast-free nutritional program if you want to gain control.  Don’t wait until the premenstrual period to get on the yeast-free nutritional program.  The yeast-free nutritional program (containing no sugar, dairy, wheat. yeasts, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and chemicals) should be followed all year long to prevent the occurrence of PMS.  Follow the cooking principles in my cookbook, Healthy and Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking to learn more about what you can eat, and what you should avoid.  The following are some important highlights:

 a)    Feed your body with complex carbohydrates instead of simple sugars.  Complex carbohydrates raise the level of a chemical in the brain called serotonin.  Serotonin elevates mood and regulates sleep.

b)    Your daily diet should contain at least 40% complex carbohydrates, less than 20% protein, and less than 20% fat.   During your premenstrual period, you may increase your complex carbohydrate intake and reduce that of protein, for protein may interfere with serotonin synthesis.

c)    Crucifers such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts are rich in dietary indoles, which are excellent in removing the excessive hormones mentioned above.  Broccoli is also rich in absorbable calcium, which is very helpful in strengthening the bones.

2.    Herbal Therapy:

Most people who suffer from a severe case of PMS also have a history of yeast disorders and drug, alcohol or nicotine addiction.  It is important, therefore, to cleanse the accumulated toxins in the body in order for it to function properly.  Our Herbal Detox program consisting of Yeast-Para Control and Cleansing-Balance Tea  is a good choice for detox during PMS or all year round.  Yeast-Para Control is designed to remove excess yeasts and parasites in your body, and Cleansing-Balance Tea is designed to flush out the “debris”, especially from your liver and kidneys.  These two formulas work hand in hand to keep your body clean and your immunity strong.  For the case of PMS, these formulas will greatly reduce sugar craving caused by the demands of yeast and parasites.

In addition, Female Vitality is very effective in balancing female hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and prolactin.  Thus, symptoms such as blood volume increase, bloatedness, water retention, and mood swings will be controlled.  Female Vitality also improves mental clarity and uplifts mood and productivity.

In part 2 of this article, I will address more self-administered, natural remedies for PMS, including exercise, Hands on Healing, stress management, and sexercise.  Stay tuned!

Premenstrual Syndrome is a cluster of symptoms experienced by women about seven to ten days before their period.  These symptoms include: headaches, poor mental concentration, mood swings, depression, anxiety, irritability, crying spells, bloatedness, breast tenderness, fatigue, sugar cravings, water retention, muscle aches in the lower extremities, pelvic discomfort or pain, insomnia, skin breakout, weight gain and loss of sexual desire.

From puberty to menopause, every woman experiences premenstrual syndrome at one time or another, to a lesser or greater degree.  About 40% of women experience noticeable and consistent symptoms.  Some are so severe that every month they are paralyzed by pain and emotional disturbance.

Premenstrual syndrome can also affect relationships.  One time a husband brought in his wife to me and said, “You fix my wife. Otherwise, either she will kill me, or I will kill her!”  The wife nodded her head and agreed.

Causes of PMS:

During the premenstrual period, there are biochemical changes in a woman’s body.  Hormones such as prostaglandin, estrogen, progesterone and prolactin escalate.  These hormones increase the blood volume.  Consequently, symptoms of water retention, bloatedness, weight gain, sugar cravings and mood swings follow.

Why sugar cravings?  When blood volume increases, the amount of blood sugar also increases.  Remember, your little friends, yeasts, are always waiting for an opportunity to have a party.  The increased amount of blood sugar is just what they need!

After they are well fed with sugar, they want more!  They cry out, “Feed me!  Feed me!”  If you don’t understand what is going on, and feed them with more sugar or chocolate, then you become the victim of a losing battle!  Yeast overgrowth symptoms will thus take a toll on you.

What are the causes of all these hormonal changes?  Why is it that some women are debilitated every month, but others don’t even know they’ve got their periods until their panties are stained?  It is the same old story: malnutrition and long term physical and emotional stress. In the next few articles I will address the treatment of this debilitating health condition.  Stay tuned.
