leaky gutWhat is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

According to Wikipedia, leaky gut syndrome is a proposed condition of a damaged bowel lining.  The term is used by some holistic health or alternative medicine practitioners, but is not a recognized diagnosis.   It is hypothesized that leaky gut syndrome is caused by increased permeability of the gut walls resulting from toxins, poor diet, parasites, infection, or medication.  The leaky gut then allows substances such as toxins, microbes, undigested food, waste, or larger than normal macromolecules to leak through an abnormally permeable gut wall.  Proponents propose that these out-of-place substances affect the body directly or initiate an immune reaction.

Symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome:

According to my clinical experience, leaky gut syndrome is a cluster of symptoms caused by the digestive tract inflammation.  They include: food allergies, bloating, diarrhea, stomach pain, extreme fatigue, mind fog, poor digestion and absorption, arthritis-like aches and pain, sleeping disorder, etc.  The symptoms mimic several diagnoses such as fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Crohn’s disease, Lyme disease, Irritated Bowel Syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, yeast and parasitic infections, etc.

For many sufferers, it’s just a relief to finally put a name to the symptoms; however, it does not change the fact that their suffering continues.  So, it’s important to know the possible causes of these symptoms and the holistic treatment for them.

Possible causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome:

1)    Yeast and parasitic infections:

Yeasts and parasites use their vampire-like hooks to hook onto the mucous membranes and suck nutrients from the host.  If they develop colonies in the gastric-intestinal tract (GI Tract), then stomach ulcers or leaky guts can be a result.  Not only do they suck nutrients from the host, but they also damage the lining of the walls of the Gastric-intestinal Tract.

2)    Poor dietary habit:

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is loaded with sugar, dairy, wheat, yeasts, caffeine, alcohol, and chemicals.  The SAD feeds the yeasts and parasites and worsens the symptoms.

3)    Psychological stress:

Carrying negative emotions such as anger, resentment, fear, regret, and guilt is like driving a car with the hand-break on.  It causes wear and tear on the car (your immune system).  When your immunity is weak, all kinds of invaders such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts and parasites can defeat you and cause a variety of illnesses.  That which is eating you psychologically is also eating you physically.

4)    Liberal use of antibiotics and other potent drugs:

The western medical establishment uses antibiotics as a “catch all” magic bullet for all infections without consideration of strengthening the immunity.  Cortisone is another popular drug used to inhibit the inflammation process.  In fact, excessive use of antibiotics and cortisone destroys the immunity, because the potent drugs kill both the good and bad bacteria floras in your intestines.  The “bad guys” such as harmful yeasts take no time to come back; while the “good guys” take a long time to rebuild.  Yeasts are airborne, and they are “omnipresent.”  They can re-enter your weak body anywhere, anytime.  Thus, an imbalance is created.   A vicious circle ensues.   To make the situation more complicated, when yeasts are present, parasites also thrive because of their symbiotic relationships.   As I explained in previous articles, when yeasts ferment, they create a chemical substance called “propyl alcohol” and that substance feeds parasites.  To return the favor, parasites use their body surface as a platform for yeasts to grow and expand.

When people develop leaky gut syndrome, usually they encounter all the factors I described above.  Leaky gut syndrome can be repaired if you employ a holistic approach, and be patient with yourself, and with your life!

In the next article, I will discuss the holistic treatment to repair leaky gut syndrome.  Stay tuned.

Every body dies. Dr. J’s mission has always been to present a choice and lifestyle to live life to the fullest and die more comfortably, instead of suffering. Read below about how baby boomers are living longer, but not healthier, than their predecessors.

Baby boomers are living longer lives than their predecessors, but not necessarily healthier lives, according to a new study that warns of rising health care costs.

Men and women born between 1946 and 1964 were more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes than the generation before them, according to the study, published today in JAMA Internal Medicine. They were also more likely to be obese and less likely to exercise.

“Despite their longer life expectancy over previous generations, U.S. baby boomers have higher rates of chronic disease, more disability, and lower self-rated health than members of the previous generation at the same age,” the study authors wrote. “On a positive note, baby boomers are less likely to smoke cigarettes and experience lower rates of emphysema and [heart attacks] than the previous generation.”

The study supports a gloomy forecast for healthcare costs as the oldest baby boomers approach their 70s. Americans spend roughly $147 billion on obesity and $177 billion on diabetes, according to theU.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We’ve got a mixed report card here,” said Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.  “We’ve got some As and Bs, but certainly some Cs and Ds with pretty serious implications for medical care in this country.”

But Schaffner say it’s never too late to turn things around.

“Exercise and diet continue to be very important as we get older, and it’s never too late to quit smoking,” said Schaffner, adding that exercise doesn’t mean “training for the Olympics.” “There are lots of easy things people can do: walking, swimming, gardening — physical activity of any kind.”

ABC News’ chief health and medical editor, Dr. Richard Besser, said the study should serve as inspiration for baby boomers with a lot more living to do.

“You can start to make a difference in your risk for all of these by making small changes in what you eat and how you move,” he said. ”It may not be easy, but it’s very simple: Start small, achieve success, and build from there.”

Woman Closing EyeIn the previous two articles, I gave you an introductory description on the increasing number of educated people who believed in reincarnation, and of how I became involved with past-life therapy starting from 1988.

I consider the knowledge, skills and experience I accumulated from past-life therapy sessions in the past 24 years as a gift.  Because of this gift, I am able to help my clients transform their relationships with themselves and/or others when their other healing processes reached a plateau.  The following is a good clinical example:

June, an attractive, intelligent, 32-year-old woman, came to me with symptoms of chronic fatigue, allergies, bloating and eating disorders.  She also suffered from depression and low self-esteem because she was out of a job.  When she experienced spurts of emotional eating, she often stuffed herself with foods containing sugar, dairy, wheat and yeast.  During those binging episodes, she ate so fast and so much that her jaws and stomach hurt.  After she was put on the anti-yeast nutritional program, she would still binge on healthy food from time to time.  Portion-control was a serious problem for her.  Knowing that she believed in reincarnation and that she had been meditating, I suggested past-life therapy be used as a technique to release some of her deep emotional issues.  She was thrilled to try it.

After a deep breathing and induction procedure, the following was revealed: June “saw” herself as an old, female beggar in England during the 14th century.  Most of her life she was starved.  One time, there was a festival in the countryside.  She sneaked into the crowd and stuffed food into her mouth as fast as she could for two reasons:  she had been starved and she was afraid that people might ask her to leave as soon as they spotted her.  She ate so fast that her jaws and her stomach hurt.

Through reprogramming, June was able to let go of the traumatic experience associated with food and allow positive images to stay with her.  In the process of reprogramming, I suggested that she “see” herself formally invited to the festival and eating slowly with grace and moderation.  She enjoyed the food and the event.  She also enjoyed the abundance of resources.  A few weeks after this past-life therapy session, she reported that she found a new job that was something she liked doing and also paid well.  Also, her eating habits dramatically improved.

To account for her low self-esteem or not loving herself, a few more past life therapy sessions were rendered.  She “saw” the following scene: A little girl was drawing an apple at a table.  After she finished drawing, she colored the big apple purple.  She liked it so much that she proudly showed it to her dad.  To her surprise, her father shouted at her, “What in the world are you doing?  Why did you color the apple purple?  I have never seen a purple apple in my life!”  His tone was that of ridicule.  Tears were streaming down June’s face, but her father never noticed.

As a grown-up, although highly intelligent and competent, June did not think much of herself.  She was always very hard on herself.  She would criticize herself harshly before anyone else had a chance.  This, of course, was rooted in her father being critical and non-supportive of her. During reprogramming, I suggested that she “see” a different picture when she presented a purple apple to her father.

Instead of ridiculing her, her father greeted her with a big smile and compliment, “What a beautiful apple!  Purple!  I’ve never seen such a beautiful apple in my life!  You are so creative, my darling!”  June proudly smiled and continued to draw more purple apples….

As you can see, past-life therapy is not only used to deal with traumatic experiences in previous lives, it is also used to reprogram unpleasant experiences in this lifetime.  Whatever might come up during a therapy session, depends on what is significant to you subconsciously.  The past-life therapist simply acts as a chauffeur.  The chauffeur’s job is to ensure that you have a safe ride, but you are the one who decides where you want to go.

In the next article (the final article of this series), I will share with you tips on how you can prepare yourself for past-life therapy, and “unstick” and heal the seemingly stubborn physical, emotional and spiritual traumas.  Stay tuned.
