Some people believe that raw foods have better nutritional value because they have “life.”  These people will go to the extreme of avoiding all cooked foods.

There are so many nutritional theories out there today that you might feel like you are walking through a jungle.   To help you cut through the jungle, I would like to recommend an approach which actually brings satisfactory results to people who are infected with yeasts and parasites.

The fact is that when my clients begin to eat lightly cooked vegetables, their symptoms of constipation, bloatedness or diarrhea improve.  Why?  The roughness of raw vegetables is very hard for a weak digestive system to handle, which in turn, causes more digestive problems.  Furthermore, the surfaces of raw vegetables usually have yeasts and parasites (especially organic ones).  Have you ever observed how farmers harvest vegetables?  Vegetables are usually sitting in the open air all season long.  The dust, dirt, yeasts, bacteria and chemical sprays (if not organically grown) stay on the surfaces of the vegetables.  Farmers usually don’t wash the vegetables when they deliver them to the markets; otherwise, the vegetables would rot easily.  Markets don’t wash the vegetables before the sale for the same reason.  Nowadays many markets spray water periodically on the vegetables to keep them green and looking fresh.  That moisture can actually facilitate the growth of yeasts on the vegetables.

Restaurants usually don’t wash the vegetables when they fix the salad for you; doing so costs more labor and time.  Can you imagine what you are eating when you have a dish of salad?  Many people feel instant fatigue or lethargy after they have a big bowl of salad.  The reasons are simple: your digestive system is being taxed and the yeast population in your body has instantly increased — a double whammy!  An additional helpful tip is to wash the vegetables very thoroughly before cooking.  This will reduce the amount of yeasts and parasites which accumulate on the surfaces of the vegetables.

If you have severe or persistent constipation or diarrhea, or alternate (Irritated Bowel Syndrome) you should cook your vegetables.  Stir-fried or steamed vegetables are as delicious as raw vegetables (salads) once you change your taste buds.  The best way to stir-fry is to use canola or vegetable oil.  These two kinds of oils are mono-unsaturated.  Chemically speaking, they have “only one arm sticking out” which means that they have very little chance to be oxidated in the cooking process.  Consequently, their nutritional value will not be altered as much by heat as polyunsaturated oil such as safflower oil.

Allergies – Part 1

Studies show that half of the people in the world have allergies.  During the holiday season, allergy symptoms are particularly rampant.  Why is this?  Foods containing sugar, dairy, wheat, yeasts, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, chemicals, and allergens are more prominent during the holidays.  Stress is another cause for allergies.  When one indulges in yeast-favorite foods and are not managing stress well, the overgrowth of yeasts and parasites becomes inevitable.

Allergy Symptoms

Allergy symptoms can manifest from head to toe.  The following are common symptoms affecting people regardless of age, sex, or ethnicity:

Headaches:  Recurrent and frequent sinus or migraine headaches.

Mid-ear Infections:  Infants and children are very susceptible to mid-ear infections.  In most cases, they inherited the yeast disorder from their mother’s bloodstream or birth canal.  Perpetual mid-ear infections also cause Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).

Eye Problems:  Irritation of the eyes, burning and swelling of eyelids, dryness of eyes or decreased vision.

Sore Throat:  Recurrent and prolonged sore throat or tonsillitis and difficulty in swallowing.

Mouth Thrush: Especially common among people with AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) or ARC (AIDS Related Complex), or infants.

Respiratory system: Bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, tightness of chest, sinus infections, excessive mucus and post-nasal drip.

Digestive System:  Bloatedness in stomach and abdomen after eating, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, ulcerative colitis, cravings for sugar, cheese, bread, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol or drugs and inability to lose or gain weight regardless of the amount of food intake.

Immune System:  Susceptibility to colds, flu, and infections; extreme fatigue and low energy.

Cardiovascular System:  Sluggish blood circulation, palpitation, cold hands and feet and varicose veins.

Reproductive System:  Impotence, painful sexual intercourse, vaginal or prostate infections, PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome), vaginal itch, endometriosis and menstrual irregularities, and menopausal symptoms.

Elimination System:  Kidney or bladder infections, hemorrhoids, mucus in stools, anal itching and burning during urination.

Skin:  Acne, eczema, psoriasis, scaly skin, lesions, rashes, athlete’s foot, cellulite, inflammation of tips of fingers and toes, hair loss and brittle nails.

Endocrine System: Hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia and diabetes mellitus.

Muscular-skeletal System:  Aches and pains in muscles and joints, bursitis, stiff and swollen fingers, and recurrent pain in the neck, shoulders and back.

In addition to physical symptoms, the following mental/psychological symptoms can also be present:

Mental Concentration:  Poor memory and mental concentration, mind fog, drowsiness.

Depression:  Loss of interest in daily life activities and suicidal thoughts.

Mood Swings:  Anger, irritability, frustration and defensiveness.

Phobia:  Fear of motions such as in/on an elevator, escalator, airplane, train, bus or boat, or fear of moving crowds (agoraphobia or social phobia).

Anxiety Attacks:  Inability to handle daily chores, shortness of breath and panic.

Insomnia:  Inability to fall asleep or to sleep through the night.

Regardless of the symptoms, the treatment principles are basically the same:

1) stay on an anti-yeast nutritional program to prevent worsening of yeast infections.

2) use strong Chinese herbal formulas to cleanse accumulated toxins

3) manage stress effectively

4) Release negative emotions such as anger, resentment, guilt, and regret.

In the next article, I will elaborate on drug-free, holistic treatment for allergies.  Stay tuned.

In the previous article, I addressed the symptoms and probable causes of yeast infections in the children I worked with in the past three decades.  Now let’s take a look at the holistic treatments that get my young clients well:

1.    Yeast-Free Nutritional Program:

My yeast-free nutritional program for children contains no sugar, no dairy, no wheat, nor yeasts.  As I pointed out in the previous article, most infants and young children have lactose intolerance.  When parents of my clients switched baby formulas from cow milk to soy milk, they observed that their babies’ allergy symptoms such as colic, trench mouth, constipation, diarrhea, and geographic tongue dissipate quickly.

I have found that young children actually follow my yeast-free nutritional programs well when their parents are committed.  I remember that when we had a restaurant in Westwood, California, we used to have young customers who frequently came for “chicken nuggets” made of soy.  This is a proof that taste buds can be changed.  Children usually follow the lead of the parents.  To learn what to eat and what to avoid, follow my yeast-free cookbook, Healthy and Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking.

By the way, in addition to many main dishes and soups, this yeast-free cookbook also has recipes for yummy baked goods including cookies, brownies, and muffins containing no sugar, no dairy, no wheat, nor yeasts.  Great treats for young children!  Involving children in the cooking and baking process is a great way to help them learn how to eat healthy.  Once you are acclimated to my cooking principles, you can create your own recipes regardless of where you are in the world.

2.    Keeping the Environment Dry:

Keep the baby’s diapers dry and clean.  Sprinkling some talcum powder after a diaper change can help prevent diaper rashes.  Calamine lotion is great for skin rashes on the face or other parts of the body.  Guide young children to keep their environment organized, dry, and clean.  They usually appreciate such a good habit.

3.    Herbal Therapy

As mentioned in the previous article, children with yeast infections tend to be misdiagnosed by their pediatricians as having bacterial infections and mistreated with excessive amounts of antibiotics.  This, in turn, perpetuates yeast infections.  In addition to a yeast-free nutritional program, our Herbal Detox (Yeast-Para Control and Cleansing-Balance Tea) works wonders to clean up children’s mid-ear infections, tonsillitis, strep throat, and asthma.  For children who cannot swallow the capsules, our Herbal Smoothie is a great way for them to take the formulas they need for their health.  I will post the recipe for my Herbal Smoothie in the next article.

4.    Parents Leading Good Examples:

Most babies with yeast infections were born with the symptoms.  The parents will also need to be treated.  It’s common sense that when parents are on a healthy track, the children will more easily follow.

5.    Replenishing Vitamin L (L for Love):

Children need assurances that they are loved; otherwise, they tend to think that they were the causes for dysfunctional situations (i.e. feeling guilty for their parents’ break-ups in the case of divorce).  Some children also use sickness as another way to get attention when they perceive that they are unloved.  Frequent reassurance of love helps build their self-esteem and immunity.

Follow the guidelines above, and you will increase your chances in raising healthier and happier children!

In the next post, I will share our Herbal Smoothie recipe which is good for the treatment and prevention of yeast infections.  Stay tuned.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is an illness characterized by a cluster of symptoms including persistent, recurrent fatigue, headaches, achy muscles, poor digestive function (such as constipation, diarrhea, and bloatedness), low-grade fever, foggy mind, confusion, irritability, lack of motivation and depression.

Both men and women can be affected by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  In my practice, however, I have observed that most of the clients are women between the ages of 20 and 50.  The personality characteristics of people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are highly successful, educated, articulate, and always on the go.  Prior to the onset of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, they were very active with their career activities, and/or were caretakers.

After several years of highly charged activities, they “ran out of gas” and collapsed.  These people tended to give, give, give, but did not receive the nurturing which was essential to replenish their reservoir.  The “Too Pooped to Pop” feelings are very real to the sufferers.  However, most western-trained physicians did not take them seriously.  Some were referred to psychiatrists by their physicians for psychotropic drugs with the reasoning that it was all in their heads!  This, of course, makes the matter worse!

People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have often suffered for many years without a proper diagnosis and treatment.  Prior to starting our holistic treatment program, many of my clients had to be on medical disability because they could not carry out regular daily functions which were routine for them before.  In some severe cases, daily chores such as brushing teeth or cooking dinner can be taxing for the sufferer.

Basically, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome shares similar symptoms with mono-nucleosis, Epstein-Barr virus, candidiasis, Crohn’s disease, as well as yeast and parasitic infections.

Causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

As mentioned earlier, people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome tend to be high achievers and devoting caretakers.  The major causes for their collapse include: “Busy-Taking-Care-of-Others Syndrome”, poor dietary habits, and yeast and parasitic infections.

Busy-Taking-Care-of-Others Syndrome:

Many people, especially women, have assumed a caretaking role.  They play their roles so well that they often forget about themselves.  They are so busy taking care of other people’s needs that they don’t have time to take care of their own needs.  Connie is a good example:

As a nurse, Connie had been a hard worker in hospitals for more than 10 years.  She had been very active in volunteer activities such as the Red Cross or other charity groups.  Her mother died of breast cancer when she was five years old.  Being the only child, she had been a caretaker for her frail father since she was a teen.

Since she was always on the run, she was on the convenient Standard American Diet (SAD) even though she was familiar with what was right for her to eat.  The onset of fatigue, headaches, poor mental concentration, weight loss, lack of motivation and depression came slowly in a period of three to six months.  Then, she totally collapsed and became bedridden when her boyfriend broke up with her.

Poor Dietary Habits:

People who are busy taking care of others usually suffer from low self-esteem.  When they don’t think much of themselves, naturally they don’t take good care of themselves.  Everybody comes first; they come last.  This tendency is also reflected in their dietary habits.  Even though Connie was a consulting nutritionist for an outpatient clinic, she did not practice what she preached.  Her diet was filled with sugar, dairy, wheat, yeast, alcohol, caffeine and chemicals.  Despite the fact she knew she was “allergic” to those kinds of foods, she could not take the time to go to health food stores to shop for the right kinds of foods.

Yeast and Parasitic Infections:

As explained in great details in my book, Breaking the Yeast Curse: Food and Unconditional Love for Magic Healing, many factors contribute to yeast and parasitic infections.  Poor dietary habits and chronic psychological stress are two main causes among others.  Yeasts and parasites have strong hooks that can suck nutrition from the intestines.  After they are well fed, they deposit toxins.  As a result, a cluster of symptoms including chronic fatigue, allergies, digestive problems, etc. will weaken the immune system and create a vicious circle.

The holistic treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrom will be discussed in the next article.  Stayed tuned!

Q.        I had digestion problems all my life. I have IBS on the constipation side and I am not able to have any milk products. I cramp up and the gas just sits in my digestion. I have gone to many doctors and they want me to go on medical drugs and I don’t like taking them. I would never get well by eating right and do it natural. Please I need some advice. I am so lost. Thank you for listening to me.

A.         Irritated Bowel Syndrome (IBS) consists of a cluster of digestive tract symptoms including alternation of constipation and diarrhea, flatulence (gas), gas pain, fatigue, foggy mind, depression, etc.  The major causes of IBS are the overgrowth of yeasts and parasites, and chronic stress.

As in the articles I posted before, and as detailed in my book, Breaking the Yeast Curse: Food and Unconditional Love for Magic Healing, there are physical and psychological causes of yeasts and parasitic infections.

Physical causes include indulgence in yeast-favorite food (Standard American Diet – SAD) containing sugar, dairy, wheat, yeast, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and chemicals, excessive use of antibiotics, lack of exercise, pre-existing illnesses, poor hygiene, sexual contact and the breakdown of the immune system.  Psychological causes include unfinished business, boredom, and “Busy-Taking-Care-of-Others Syndrome”.  Psychological stress is actually the primary cause of yeast disorders.

To effectively treat Irritated Bowel Syndrome (IBS), I would suggest using a holistic approach.  Adopt a yeast-free nutritional program that contains no sugar, dairy, wheat, yeast, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and chemicals.  The above no-no’s are “Dr. J’s Eight Commandments” as detailed in my cookbook, Healthy & Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking A yeast-free nutritional program will nourish your body and starve the yeasts and parasites –your little enemies within.

Our Herbal Detox Program consisting of Yeast-Para Control and Cleansing-Balance Tea is highly effective in combatting IBS.  Yeast-Para Control will remove excess yeasts and parasites in your body, and allow your body’s innate intelligence to heal you.  Cleansing-Balance Tea is designed to cleanse your liver and kidneys so that toxins will not build up in your body.  The function of Yeast-Para Control is like a scrub for the toilet, and that of Cleansing-Balance Tea is the flushing of the toilet.  You can also add Herbal Cocktail, a high-protein herbal drink, to nourish your body that is starving for nutrients.

On the psychological perspective, one should learn to effectively manage one’s stress.  In my book: Breaking the Yeast curse: Food and Unconditional Love for Magic Healing, one can learn valuable techniques such as 10-minute meditation, Emotional Releasing Technique, special prayers, and affirmations.

I offer consultation on yeast-free nutrition, Chinese Herbal Detox, Hormonal Balance, and Weight Control on the phone or Skype.  For an appointment, please call 1-800-715-3053 or send an e-mail to drj@drjsbest.com.

What is Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS)?

ARS occurs when individuals are exposed to a large amount of radiation in a very short period of time.  According to earthquake experts, 6 G (gray is a measurement of radiation exposure) is a lethal dosage.  Individuals exposed to more than 6 Gy of radiation will die within days or weeks.  Why is radiation so lethal? Radiation burns and kills.  It destroys DNA in white blood cells, and thus destroys the immune system.

Symptoms of ARS:

Within two to three days of radiation exposure, if a cluster symptoms of nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, skin burns, confusion, etc. occur, that’s an indication of ARS.

Treatment for ARS:

According to the Mayo clinic, treatment for ARS is geared towards symptom relief.  If there is radioactive iodine in the radiation, the patient is also given Iodine potassium (KI) to prevent thyroid cancer.  However, KI will not prevent other types of cancer such as leukemia.

Should we be worried about ARS?

Unless you are exposed to a large dosage of radiation within a short period of time, you will not suffer from Acute Radiation Syndrome.  The fallout of the radiation diffuses the radiation power after “travelling” a distance.  Some people in the U. S. are very concerned about the impact of the nuclear power plant damage after the earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima, Japan.  However, what we really should be concerned about is chronic radiation sickness.

In future posts, I will elaborate on the symptoms of chronic radiation sickness and the role of yeast-free living in the prevention and treatment of this serious public health issue.

For consultation on yeast-free nutrition, herbal therapy, stress managememt, and spiritual counseling on Skype or telephone, please call us at (800) 715-3053 for an appointment.
