Jan. 31, 2013 — The risk of hospitalization or death from heart disease is almost a third lower in vegetarians than in people who eat meat and fish, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Oxford in England say the health benefits of not eating meat likely stem from having lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

But heart experts caution that following a vegetarian diet is unlikely to be enough to prevent heart disease.

Major Killer

Heart disease is the largest cause of death in developed countries.

The study looked at 44,561 men and women living in England and Scotland who were enrolled during the 1990s in a separate Oxford study looking at links betweencancer and nutrition.

Researchers used this database because of the unusually high number of vegetarians enlisted: 34% of the people.

All the people were asked about their health and lifestyles when they joined. This included questions about diet and exercise, as well as other factors affecting health such as smoking and drinking alcohol. Almost 20,000 participants also had their blood pressures recorded and gave blood samples for cholesterol testing.

The volunteers were tracked until 2009. During that time, researchers recorded 1,066 people with heart disease and 169 deaths from heart disease.

The researchers found that vegetarians had a 32% lower risk of developing heart disease than those who ate fish and meat. They did not differentiate between red and white meat, nor did they track how much meat was eaten.

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

“We didn’t look at the specific components of the vegetarian diet that might contribute to the lower risk of heart disease in this study, but because the vegetarians have lower blood cholesterol, it is probably because they have a lower intake of saturated fat and a higher intake of polyunsaturated fat,” says Francesca Crowe, who led the study.

Crowe says the vegetarians also ate more fruits, vegetables, and fiber, which might have contributed to their lower risk of heart disease.

The researchers say lower blood pressure among the vegetarians is likely to be an important factor.

Additionally, vegetarians typically had a lower body mass index (BMI) and fewer cases of diabetes (although these were not found to significantly affect the results). If the results are adjusted to exclude the effects of BMI, vegetarians are 28% less likely to develop heart disease, the researchers say.

The study appears in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Can caffeine kill you?

It really depends on the quantity of caffeine you ingest, and whether it interacts with other substances such as drugs and alcohol.  It also depends on your pre-existing heart conditions.

The recent claims about a few teenagers who died after drinking a large quantity of Energy Drinks loaded with caffeine may make people think that caffeine is a killer.  If you have been reading my articles, “no caffeine” is one of my “Eight Commandments” in my anti-yeast nutritional program (see my yeast-free cookbook: Healthy and Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking).

Caffeine is a stimulant.  A large quantity of caffeine interacting with drugs, and/or alcohol, and pre-existing heart conditions, can cause arrhythmia (irregular heart bits), and possible death.  On the safe side, I would recommend our caffeine-free herbal smoothie if you like to boost your energy.  Call me at my direct line at (818) 472-2213 or e-mail me at: drj@drjsbest.com and I will send you a delicious, all natural, caffeine-free, sugar-free herbal smoothie recipe to boost your energy without harming your health.

In the past few weeks I posted information regarding detrimental effects certain foods will have on your health.  In my yeast-free cookbook, Healthy and Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking, I provide details about Dr. J’s Eight Commandments:

  1. no sugar
  2. no dairy
  3. no wheat
  4. no yeasts
  5. no caffeine
  6. no alcohol
  7. no nicotine
  8. no chemicals

If you follow these Eight Commandments, you actually have a very healthy Weight Loss Meal Plan.

Why do I call it a Weight Loss Meal Plan?  Because when you follow this meal plan, automatically, your bloating will dissipate and your tummy will flatten.  Moreover, because you nourish your body and starve the yeasts and parasites, your thyroid gland gets a chance to heal and restore its function.  When your metabolism is improved, naturally your excess weight will come off.

To learn what to eat and what to avoid, follow my yeast-free cookbook, Healthy and Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking.

Standard American Diet (SAD) usually contains a large amount of sugar, dairy, wheat, and yeasts.  In the past few weeks I have been posting why these food items are detrimental to your health.

Hopefully it is clear to you now that sugar, dairy, wheat and yeast products are favorite foods for yeasts and parasites.  Unfortunately, a great number of people live on these foods.  When you feed the favorite foods to yeasts and parasites, they are so happy that they start an instant rock n’and roll party!  After having a great time, like any other beings, they have to go to the bathroom.  They then use your body as a toilet to dump lots of toxins.

When they suck your energy through their strong, vampire-like hooks, you experience extreme fatigue or lethargy because when you eat, you are actually feeding an extended family in your body.  When yeasts and parasites deposit toxins, you may suffer from allergy symptoms such as sinus congestion, headaches, arthritis-like aches and pains, lower back pain, bloatedness, constipation, or bladder or kidney infections.  Yeasts, parasites and their toxins can clog the liver, pancreas and thyroid and make your blood sugar metabolism sluggish.  This is one of the causes for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).  Hypoglycemia can then contribute to headaches, foggy mind, poor mental concentration, poor memory and irritability.  Another factor contributing to your foggy mind is that when yeasts ferment in your body, a by-product, ammonia, can alter your thinking process and cause disorientation.

Some people believe that raw foods have better nutritional value because they have “life.”  These people will go to the extreme of avoiding all cooked foods.

There are so many nutritional theories out there today that you might feel like you are walking through a jungle.   To help you cut through the jungle, I would like to recommend an approach which actually brings satisfactory results to people who are infected with yeasts and parasites.

The fact is that when my clients begin to eat lightly cooked vegetables, their symptoms of constipation, bloatedness or diarrhea improve.  Why?  The roughness of raw vegetables is very hard for a weak digestive system to handle, which in turn, causes more digestive problems.  Furthermore, the surfaces of raw vegetables usually have yeasts and parasites (especially organic ones).  Have you ever observed how farmers harvest vegetables?  Vegetables are usually sitting in the open air all season long.  The dust, dirt, yeasts, bacteria and chemical sprays (if not organically grown) stay on the surfaces of the vegetables.  Farmers usually don’t wash the vegetables when they deliver them to the markets; otherwise, the vegetables would rot easily.  Markets don’t wash the vegetables before the sale for the same reason.  Nowadays many markets spray water periodically on the vegetables to keep them green and looking fresh.  That moisture can actually facilitate the growth of yeasts on the vegetables.

Restaurants usually don’t wash the vegetables when they fix the salad for you; doing so costs more labor and time.  Can you imagine what you are eating when you have a dish of salad?  Many people feel instant fatigue or lethargy after they have a big bowl of salad.  The reasons are simple: your digestive system is being taxed and the yeast population in your body has instantly increased — a double whammy!  An additional helpful tip is to wash the vegetables very thoroughly before cooking.  This will reduce the amount of yeasts and parasites which accumulate on the surfaces of the vegetables.

If you have severe or persistent constipation or diarrhea, or alternate (Irritated Bowel Syndrome) you should cook your vegetables.  Stir-fried or steamed vegetables are as delicious as raw vegetables (salads) once you change your taste buds.  The best way to stir-fry is to use canola or vegetable oil.  These two kinds of oils are mono-unsaturated.  Chemically speaking, they have “only one arm sticking out” which means that they have very little chance to be oxidated in the cooking process.  Consequently, their nutritional value will not be altered as much by heat as polyunsaturated oil such as safflower oil.

Many people think that milk supplies a rich source of protein and calcium.  Protein, yes; calcium, no!  Because of the homogenization process, the calcium in milk is difficult for your body to absorb.  People who drink a lot of milk end up having calcium deposits in their joints and fingers and developing arthritic symptoms.  Some also develop painful kidney stones.  Many grains, green leafy vegetables and herbs are rich in absorbable calcium.  You should not rely on milk or other dairy products to treat or prevent calcium deficiency.

Drinking a lot of milk to correct calcium deficiency is a myth!  Many research studies reveal that when people drink milk to increase calcium intake, they also increase protein intake.  When protein intake is high, it produces a high ratio of phosphorus.  Phosphorus is acid. In order to balance the Ph of the blood, calcium (an alkaline) is drawn from your bones.  This is actually the main cause for osteoporosis.

Dairy products include whole or skim milk, ice cream, cheese, yogurt and butter.  These are favorite foods for yeasts and parasites and are mucous-producing.  Mucous can accumulate in the sinuses, throat, bronchus, lungs and digestive tract.  Sinus headaches, sore throats, asthma, bronchial infections, coughs, postnasal drips, halitosis, and constipation are common symptoms associated with mucous problems.
