As explained previously, the major causes for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) include psychological, dietary and yeast-related factors.  Therefore, only a holistic treatment regimen will yield long-lasting results.  Based on my clients’ responses, the following have been the most effective self-administered treatment methods.

 

Boosting Energy:         

            The most important first step is to boost energy level so that you can perform basic activities in your life.  A yeast-free nutritional program is essential to nourish your body with the right kind of food.  At the same time, you would starve the yeasts and parasites which have been partially responsible for the debilitating condition of CFS.  A yeast-free nutritional program will control the fermentation and destruction of your cells and tissues.  This, in turn, will improve your body’s ability to absorb and utilize essential nutrients.  To learn what to eat and what to avoid, follow my yeast-free cookbook, Healthy and Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking.

Exercise: 

People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can easly sleep 10 to 16 hours a day and still feel fatigued.  Exercise would be the last thing they want to do.  Remember, yeasts love a still environment that has no air.  When your body is immobile, your blood circulation is poor and your oxygen supply is insufficient.  This creates an excellent incubator for yeasts and parasites to overgrow! 

 

Force yourself to start with five minutes of slow walking around the house or around the block.  Slowly increase to 30 minutes a day.   You will find that you are invigorated after each slow walk.  You will have better results if you walk outdoors. 

During the recuperating period, there is one danger to keep in mind.  A few days to a few weeks after you get on the right track, you may begin to experience surges of energy.  This is an exciting feeling!  This excitement often leads you to overdo it again!   

Ellen is a good example:

 

            After suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for several years, Ellen was so excited about her “new found energy.”  Three weeks into our holistic treatment, she woke up one morning with a surge of energy.  She quickly resumed the activity level she used to have before the onset of Chronic Fatigue  Syndrome.   She cleaned the house, did the laundry and grocery shopping, and then went to the gym.  While she was working out in the gym, she collapsed and fell on her face!   

          

            Remember the principle of healing?  For one year of illness, it takes at least one month to heal.  Allow your energy reserve to build up.  Don’t exhaust your reservor too quickly.

   

            Slow walking is recommended for the first three to six months during the recovery period.  After that, any vigorous exercise should be introduced slowly, based on your body’s ability to handle it.

 

 

Re-Establishing Self-Image:           

            The onset of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is coupled with the loss of self.  Seek proper professional help to reestablish a sense of self.  Many caretakers give their care or love to make themselves feel important and thus feel loved or respected.  In order to be loved and respected by others, you must love and respect yourself first.  See yourself as the most important human being on Earth.  Exercise the art of selfishness.   Learn to take care of yourself first before you take care of others.   

            Practice self-love and self-respect.  Write a brief note or buy a card to praise yourself whenever you accomplish something.   Take yourself to a movie or a shopping trip if you feel a little down.  Develop a support system with which you can share your joys and agonies.  Being a “lone ranger” can be very fatiguing. 

            Allow yourself to receive love and care.  Every so often revert to the child stage to ask for love and attention.  If you don’t know how, just observe young children.  They will show you how you can ask for love and attention without allowing your ego or pride get in the way.

           

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome comes from chronic neglect of yourself emotionally and physically.  No doctors out there can cure you but yourself.  A Chinese proverb says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” Take your first step, no matter how hard it is.  Each following step will become easier and easier.  Sooner or later, you will step out of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome!

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is an illness characterized by a cluster of symptoms including persistent, recurrent fatigue, headaches, achy muscles, poor digestive function (such as constipation, diarrhea, and bloatedness), low-grade fever, foggy mind, confusion, irritability, lack of motivation and depression.

           

            Both men and women can be affected by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  In my practice, however, I have observed that most of the clients are women between the ages of 20 and 50.  The personality characteristics of people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are highly successful, educated, articulate, and always on the go.  Prior to the onset of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, they were very active with their career activities, and/or were caretakers.

 

            After several years of highly charged activities, they “ran out of gas” and collapsed.  These people tended to give, give, give, but did not receive the nurturing which was essential to replenish their reservoir.  The “Too Pooped to Pop” feelings are very real to the sufferers.  However, most western-trained physicians did not take them seriously.  Some were referred to psychiatrists by their physicians for psychotropic drugs with the reasoning that it was all in their heads!  This, of course, makes the matter worse!

           

            People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have often suffered for many years without a proper diagnosis and treatment.  Prior to starting our holistic treatment program, many of my clients had to be on medical disability because they could not carry out regular daily functions which were routine for them before.  In some severe cases, daily chores such as brushing teeth or cooking dinner can be taxing for the sufferer. 

            

Basically, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome shares similar symptoms with mono-nucleosis, Epstein-Barr virus, candidiasis, Crohn’s disease, as well as yeast and parasitic infections.

   

Causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

           

            As mentioned earlier, people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome tend to be high achievers and devoting caretakers.  The major causes for their collapse include: “Busy-Taking-Care-of-Others Syndrome”, poor dietary habits, and yeast and parasitic infections.

  

Busy-Taking-Care-of-Others Syndrome:

           

Many people, especially women, have assumed a caretaking role.  They play their roles so well that they often forget about themselves.  They are so busy taking care of other people’s needs that they don’t have time to take care of their own needs.  Connie is a good example:

 

            As a nurse, Connie had been a hard worker in hospitals for more than 10 years.  She had been very active in volunteer activities such as the Red Cross or other charity groups.  Her mother died of breast cancer when she was five years old.  Being the only child, she had been a caretaker for her frail father since she was a teen. 

 

            Since she was always on the run, she was on the convenient Standard American Diet (SAD) even though she was familiar with what was right for her to eat.  The onset of fatigue, headaches, poor mental concentration, weight loss, lack of motivation and depression came slowly in a period of three to six months.  Then, she totally collapsed and became bedridden when her boyfriend broke up with her.

  

Poor Dietary Habits:

 

            People who are busy taking care of others usually suffer from low self-esteem.  When they don’t think much of themselves, naturally they don’t take good care of themselves.  Everybody comes first; they come last.  This tendency is also reflected in their dietary habits.  Even though Connie was a consulting nutritionist for an outpatient clinic, she did not practice what she preached.  Her diet was filled with sugar, dairy, wheat, yeast, alcohol, caffeine and chemicals.  Despite the fact she knew she was “allergic” to those kinds of foods, she could not take the time to go to health food stores to shop for the right kinds of foods.

 

Yeast and Parasitic Infections:

 

As explained in great details in my book, Breaking the Yeast Curse: Food and Unconditional Love for Magic Healing, many factors contribute to yeast and parasitic infections.  Poor dietary habits and chronic psychological stress are two main causes among others.  Yeasts and parasites have strong hooks that can suck nutrition from the intestines.  After they are well fed, they deposit toxins.  As a result, a cluster of symptoms including chronic fatigue, allergies, digestive problems, etc. will weaken the immune system and create a vicious circle.

According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, an estimated 25 million people have some form of hypothyroidism, but only half have been diagnosed.

What is thyroid?  What is hypothyroidism?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in front of your windpipe.  Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough of a hormone called thyroxine. 

Thyroxine governs your body’s metabolism and helps control how your body uses energy and how well your cells, tissues and organs work.  Therefore, not having enough thyroxine can cause unpleasant symptoms throughout your body.

The most common symptoms include:

Physical Symptoms:

  • Weight gain
  • Dry skin
  • Yellow skin
  • Hair loss, including the eyebrows
  • Swollen face, hands, legs, ankles or feet
  • Cold feet and cold hands
  • Aches and pains in muscles or joints
  • Hoarse or raspy voice
  • Constipation
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding or irregular periods
  • Fatigue

Mental Symptoms:

  • Slower thinking
  • Poor mental concentration
  • Slower speech or movement
  • Depression

In some cases, an enlarged thyroid gland, slowed heart rate, and infertility may occur.

Excess weight is a very costly health problem which can be associated with life threatening conditions such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disorders, gallbladder disease and metabolic dysfunction.  Being overweight can negatively affect health, appearance, self-esteem, and even earning potential.  Some researchers estimate that each pound of extra fat can cost an executive $1,000 a year in income.

Causes of Overweight Problems:       

Major causes of being overweight include poor eating habits, yeast disorders, thyroid dysfunction, psychological stress and spiritual imbalance.

Poor Eating Habits:

As mentioned previously, an average American eats 120 pounds of sugar per year.  From birth to age 70, on the average, an American eats eight cows, nine pigs and 15,000 eggs.  A well-balanced diet should contain less than 20% fat, less than 20% protein and more than 40% complex carbohydrates.  Excess intake of fat, protein and sugar can turn into overstorage of fat.  Americans also tend to overeat or not to eat at regular hours.  Some skip breakfasts and others have big meals right before bedtime.  Irregular hours and portions can confuse your biological clock and jeopardize your metabolic function.

Yeast Disorders:

As described in previous articles, yeast disorders are misdiagnosed and improperly treated by most medical professionals.  In addition to all the symptoms from head to toe such as foggy mind, allergies, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), chronic fatigue, low enegy, immune deficiency, arthritis-like aches and pains, skin rash, vaginal yeast infections, male yeast infections, depression, anxiety, etc, a persistent overweight condition can be an indication that your metabolic function is being jeopardized by stubborn yeast disorders. 

Yeast can creep in to any part of your body, especially sites which are weak to begin with.  For instance, if your thyroid gland is weak, then opportunistic yeasts can particularly affect your metabolic function and cause further deterioration.  If yeast disorders are not corrected, the weight problem will persist.  Some clients complained to me that they gained weight even if they just drank water!  Even though they may not have been as innocent as they portrayed themselves to be, there is some degree of reality in their complaint.  The fact is that it is very difficult for them to lose weight, no matter how hard they try. 

Hypothyroidism:

Severe hypothyroidism manifests symptoms such as obesity, constipation, dry skin, cold intolerance, hair loss, puffy face and mental retardation.  Contributing factors include congenital and environmental causes.  The latter includes poor eating habits.  Constant excessive consumption of sugar causes overwork and exhaustion of the thyroid gland.  On top of it all, untreated yeast disorders will further weaken thyroid function.

Psychological Stress:

Some people manage to be in constant crises.  For those who are used to a dysfunctional behavioral pattern, they feel anxious or uneasy if their lives are peaceful.  Somehow they have to create a situation where there will be chaos, and thus their frantic behavior can be justified. 

People who are not able to manage stress effectively will usually indulge themselves in emotional eating.  Food is a symbol of love and comfort across cultures, especially for those who associate food with parental approval and attention.

Spiritual Imbalance:

Many overweight people suffer from spiritual imbalance because they carry a great deal of  “unfinished business” on their shoulders.  In most cases, they crave approval from their parents.   Some are angry and hurt because they were abused sexually, mentally or physically during their childhood.  The predominant emotions are anger, resentment, grief and regret.  Some even feel sorry for themselves and feel that their negative feelings are well justified.  Usually they are unclear about the purpose of their existences.  They tend to “live to eat,” instead of “eat to live.”

Many people are concerned about the nuclear fallout from Fukushima, Japan.  In my previous articles I clarified that Americans in the U. S. do not have to be concerned about acute radiation syndrome (ARS) at this time, since ARS only occurs when there is a large amount of exposure to radiation in a short period of time.

What we need to be concerned about is chronic radiation sickness.  Most radiation particles have a long half-life.  For example, cesium: Cs-137 has a half-life of 30 years  Radiation particles can contaminate the water supply, food, environment, pets, and people. 

The symptoms of chronic radiation sickness vary according to the dose and the duration of radiation exposed.  The general symptoms include:  recurrent infections, low grade fever, loss of appetite, weakness and fatigue, fainting, dehydration, inflammation (swelling, redness or tenderness of tissues), anemia, unhealed open wounds, hair loss, bruises, and skin burns.  Large amounts of or long term exposure can cause birth defects and cancer. 

Treatment usually focuses on the reduction of symptoms.  The Mayo Clinic staff is also concerned about bacterial infections.  However, there is no mention of yeast disorders. 

Why do yeast disorders occur with chronic radiation sickness?  Very simple, radiation burns and kills.  It destroys the DNA in your white cells, and thus destroys the immune system.  If the immune system is weak, the body has no defense when yeasts, bacteria, viruses and parasites invade.  The contemporary medical establishment uses antibiotics liberally to kill bacteria and viruses, but antibiotics kill both the good and bad guys.  The good guys (good bacteria floras) take a long time to come back, while the bad guys (harmful yeasts) take no time to repopulate.  Consequently the body suffers a severe case of yeast overgrowth, and that can contribute to cancer as well.

Yeasts and parasites develop their colonies at parts of your body that are weak and have little defense.  Therefore, symptoms of yeast and parasitic infections can range from head to toe.

For example, if your thyroid gland is weak, yeasts and parasites will lodge in that area and cause overweight or underweight problems.  If they attack the mid ear, they can cause mid-ear infections and thus Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).   They can also cause allergies, mouth thrush, asthma, foggy mind, depression, phbias, vaginal yeast infections, prostatitis, hormonal imbalance, fibromyalgia, skin rash, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  The above are only some examples, the list goes on.

Many people across the globe approach this holiday with new expectations and hopes for a healthy and prosperous year, while weaving in home traditions and rituals passed down from ancestors.  The holiday season can be a joyous occasion; however, it can also wear us down with additional responsibilities and stresses.

Ask yourself: do you feel sluggish, anxious, stressed, depressed, or catch the flu or cold easily during or after the holiday season?  If so, read on!

You may get physically sick and/or emotionally distressed during the holiday season for multiple reasons.  The following are some common ones:

Physically and Mentally Overloaded

During the holiday season, you may take on more activities (such as shopping) than usual in order to prepare for holiday gatherings and celebrations.  This puts your body, mind and spirit into “overwork mode”.  An overworked machine needs down time; so does your body!

Overgrowth of Yeast and Parasites

The availability of junk food during the holiday season presents tests for your will power.  You might fail these tests and spoil your healthy eating habits.  Once the little enemies (yeast and parasites) in your body are well fed with their favorite foods (including sugar, dairy, wheat, yeast, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and chemicals), they have a “rock ‘n roll party!”  After they have a good time, they deposit their eliminations in your body.  This is the major reason that you get sick during the holiday seasons.  Your liver and kidneys are particularly vulnerable when your body is loaded with toxins; they act like oil and air filters in a car.  What happens when these filters in your car become dirty?  You know the answer!

Unfinished Business

Old life events might replay like old tapes in your head if you did not work through certain emotional issues.  When you live in an unpleasant past, your feelings of love, joy, and gratitude are blocked.  Regardless of the current life situation you are in, you cannot appreciate and enjoy the here and now.  You feel depressed because you focus on what you don’t want, instead of what you want.

Can you combat the holiday blues and attain the state of peace, love and harmony?  Yes!

Here are some suggestions and recommendations for you:

1)    Treat every day like a holiday!

Get together with your friends or relatives on a regular basis, so that there is no need to cram a lot of gatherings into the holiday season.  A holiday is merely one of 365 days in the year.  If you don’t make it “special”, there will not be special meanings attached to it!

2)    Give your presents before or after the holidays.

There is no rule dictating that you can only give your presents on certain days of the year.  Create your own schedule for holiday gift giving.  Make it simple and useful.  I usually mail a check to my gift recipients before the holidays.  Therefore there will be no unwanted gifts. Many of my clients order and drop ship books and herbal formulas to their loved ones.  Nice and easy, and your thoughtfulness will be appreciated!

3)    Maintain your daily routine.

Keep your ordinary schedule of arising, sleeping, exercising, resting and eating at certain times.  Avoid the holiday frenzy.  Your metabolism is at its optimal level when your body follows a harmonious biological rhythm!

4)    Follow a Yeast-Free Nutritional Program.

5)    Control the Overgrowth of Yeast and Parasites.

When you control the overgrowth of yeast and parasites in your body, you will minimize the amount of toxic waste deposited in your body, and allow your body’s innate intelligence to function at its optimal level.  As a result, you will enjoy heightened energy and mental clarity to handle holiday-related stress.   The best way to achieve this state is taking potent herbal formulas designed to remove excess yeast and parasites simultaneously.  Yeast and parasites are like Siamese Twins.  You must treat yeast and parasitic infections simultaneously in order to reclaim your health!

6)    Meditate daily to ensure quiet time.

If the holidays remind you of unpleasant previous life experiences and cause you depression, then it’s time to clean house!  Consult with an experienced therapist who specializes in spiritual psychotherapy.  Emotional traumas that have occurred in the past can be reprogrammed.  Therefore, you can start your life with a clean slate.

Remember, life is a series of tests.  Allow yourself to “graduate” from each level of “schooling” that you encounter.  Always ask yourself,” What can I learn from this life event?”  When you feel alone, frustrated, tired, or depressed, just drop on your knees and pray for solutions.  Always P. U. S. H.  – Pray Until Something Happens.  Whether you believe in a higher presence or not, it does not matter!  It’s free of charge.  What have you got to lose?

Chronic fatigue syndrome, or CFS, is characterized by overwhelming fatigue that causes people to function at a significantly lower level of activity than capable of before having an illness. It does not improve by bedrest, and may be worsened by physical and mental activity. Nonspecific symptoms used to diagnose CFS include weakness, muscle pain, impaired memory, short mental concentration, insomnia, recurrent sore throat, and post-exertional fatigue lasting more than 24 hours.  CFS patients may also experience other symptoms such as irritable bowel, depression, night sweats, noise, dizziness, difficulty maintaining upright posture, and sensitivities to foods and odors.
