Cleansing crisis is also known as a healing crisis.  This occurrence is common when one takes our Herbal Detox program- Yeast-Para Control and Cleansing-Balance Tea.  The occurrence is also common for those who simply start a yeast-free nutritional regimen containing no sugar, no dairy, no wheat, no yeasts, no caffeine, no alcohol, no nicotine nor chemicals. 

The reaction occurs when your body tries to eliminate toxins. The more toxic your body systems are, the more severe the detoxification, or healing crisis.

I normally alert my clients of the following:  Whatever symptoms you are experiencing now could be worse.  Additional symptoms you don’t experience currently may also appear.

Some people who are not familiar with the concept of cleansing crisis may jump to the conclusion that they are allergic to Dr. J’s herbs or holistic treatment programs and rush to their MD’s for more prescriptions of antibiotics or cortisone.  The fact is these are signs that the detox program is working effectively to remove the toxins from your body, and thereby allows your body’s innate intelligence to heal you.

Cleansing reactions can occur immediately, or within several days, or even several weeks after you start our Herbal Detox, Hormonal Regeneration, Weight Management, and/or yeast-free nutritional programs.  Going through cleansing crises is like peeling an onion layer by layer.  Cleansing crises are like waves – they come and go. Sometimes “tidal waves” can occur, and you might feel like you were run over by a truck!  Committed clients have told me that they “feel great about feeling miserable”!  Some even take a few days off from work and rest, so that it’s easier for them to go through each cleansing crisis.

Sometimes discomfort during the healing crisis is of greater intensity than when you were developing and enduring the chronic disease. This is why there may be a brief flare-up in your symptoms. Often the crisis will come after you are feeling your best. I called it the “honey moon period”.  After the honey moon period, cleansing crises occur because your body dumps toxins into the blood stream for elimination. When the stored wastes are in a free-flowing state, a variety of symptoms may flare up.

The healing crisis will usually bring about past conditions.  People often forget the diseases or injuries they have sustained in the past, but are usually reminded of during the crisis.

Common Symptoms of Cleansing Crisis:

 There are a wide variety of reactions that may manifest during a healing crisis.

The most common cleansing symptoms include:

  •  Cold or flu-like symptoms
  • Headaches
  • Sinus congestion
  • Extreme fatigue or the opposite: restlessness
  • Arthritis-like pains in the joints
  • Aches and pains in the muscles (fibromyalgia)
  • constipation or Diarrhea
  • Skin rashes including boils and hives
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Suppressed memories arise
  • Low grade fever
  • Frequent urination
  • Strong emotions: anger, resentment, sadness, fear, guilt, regrets, etc.

How does one manage a cleansing crisis?

Basically there are two ways:  sharp, short pain, or dull, long pain.  It does not matter which way you chose, the same amount of toxins need to be removed.

You can choose to tough it out and enjoy a clean slate sooner; or you can reduce the dosage of our herbal formulas, and go through a longer journey to cleanse.

Most of my clients drink a substantial amount of Cleansing-Balance Tea to flush out toxins in the liver and kidneys during the cleansing crisis.  One tea bag of Cleansing-Balance Tea makes one pot: 6 cups (8 oz. each cup). Some of my clients drink two pots a day during the cleansing crisis.  Braver clients with situations such as drug addiction or Irritated Bowel Syndrome (IBS) increase the dosage of our herbal formulas to hasten the cleansing effects.  If you need to work and/or perform a certain amount of daily chores, then just reduce the dosage of our herbal formulas and go through a milder, but longer cleansing period.

You also can choose to stop the cleansing crisis and go back to the same unhealthy lifestyle.  However, I have news for you:  it’s not uncommon that these kinds of clients come back to me after they have developed life-threatening diseases such as cancer, tumors, heart disease, etc.  By that time, they would need to spend more resources, time and effort to go through the cleansing crisis, all the while living under the shadow of death.

The choice is yours.  With each choice you make, you need to prepare for the consequences associated with it.  As a helping professional, my job is to simply help my clients live or die more comfortably.

The conventional treatment for hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is using synthroid at various dosages to match with your body’s production of triiodothyronine (T-3) and thyroxine (T-4).  Synthroid is a synthetic hormone identical to the natural hormones in your body.  Because the production of T3 and T4 fluctuates based on your body’s need to metabolize sugar and fats you consume, the dosage of synthroid needs to be adjusted to avoid overdose of the drug.  Frequent visits to your doctor’s office are essential for blood tests to determine the T3 and T4 levels.

Are you suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)?  Review the following checklist to find out:

  • Are you having trouble concentrating?
  • Are you forgetful?
  • Are you impulsive?
  • Are you hyperactive?
  • Do you talk very fast?
  • Is your speech slow or slurred?
  • Are you a smart thinker and yet a slow learner?
  • Are you prone to motion-related phobias (such as fears of moving elevators, escalators, cars, planes, trains, or crowds)?
  • Are you often depressed, anxious and irritable?

If you’ve checked off more than three items, then chances are you are among the five million Americans who suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or ADHD!  Despite the growing attention this disorder has received in the past few decades, the diagnostic and treatment process remains elusive, complex, and inclusive!

Possible Causes of ADD or ADHD:

ADD or ADHD can affect children, adolescents, and adults.  Each case can differ widely in terms of symptoms, causes, therapeutic process and prognosis.  After dealing with numerous children and adults with ADD or ADHD, I have found the following common factors:

Physical Factors:

The most common physical factor I have found, which may be shocking to many, is yeast infection involving the inner or middle ears.  Dr. Harold Levinson in his book, Total Concentration (1990) states that more than 80% of patients with ADD he has seen suffered from inner-ear infections.  He explains in great detail how the inner-ear system or the cerebellar-vestibular system (CVS) controls the flow of sensory information entering the brain.  When this system is impaired by infections of the inner ear, your vision, hearing, balance, senses of direction, motion, altitude, depth, and smell, and all motor information leaving the brain can be scrambled.  Consequently, this auditory drift results in problems in balance and coordination, concentration, memory, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.  In some cases, speech timing is off, which can result in rapid speech or slow, slurred speech.  A malfunctioning inner ear has difficulty processing motor input; this in turn makes the affected individual prone to motion-related phobias such as fear of moving elevators, escalators, cars, planes, trains, buses and crowds.

What Dr. Levinson failed to address was what this inner-ear infection is all about and what causes it.  In my experience, this inner-ear infection is yeast infection that can be contracted before or after birth.  If a pregnant woman has yeast infections, she can give the infections to her baby through the blood stream and/or birth canal.  The baby can be born with yeast infections manifesting symptoms such as eye or ear infections, respiratory tract congestion and colic.

Psychological Factors:

Most children and adults with ADD or ADHD suffer from psychological distress.  The following is a good example:        

Mary, a 19-year-old Caucasian college student was brought to my office because of her impulsive eating, which resulted in overweight problems, poor mental concentration, resistant behavior, constant chattering, rapid speech, poor academic performance and low self-esteem.  Mary exhibited the above behavior while she was in the elementary school.  She was doing fairly well while she was placed in a private high school with a structured routine.  After entering college, she was overwhelmed by the “complicated life of a sophomore” and her previous pattern of ADD behavior began to worsen.

Dietary Factors:

The Standard American Diet (SAD) has created many SAD stories.  Over-consumption of food containing sugar, dairy, wheat, yeast, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and chemicals (including food preservatives and coloring, and heavy metals) has caused every American yeast overgrowth at one time or the other, to a greater or lesser degree.  Symptoms of yeast disorder that contribute to ADD include headaches, poor mental concentration (foggy mind), middle or inner ear infections, strep throat, nasal congestion, mood swings, depression and phobias.

Environmental Factors:

Many people with ADD live in an environment that contributes to or worsens their disorders.  Children with ADD or ADHD often have parents who also suffer from ADD.  Some parents recognize their disorders; however, most don’t.  Many schoolteachers also have ADD, but most don’t recognize or don’t want to admit to the affliction.  Stress due to parents’ divorce, illness, financial hardship, etc., also can complicate a child’s ADD or ADHD.

If ADD or ADHD is untreated during childhood, the symptoms will continue into adolescence and adulthood.  If the environment is non-understanding and non-supportive, the difficulty in dealing with everyday demands will be exacerbated.

In order to control your weight permanently, you need to nourish your body, mind, and spirit on a consistent basis.  As described in the previous article,  it’s important to follow a yeast-free nutritional program so your body will not suffer new assaults.   It’s also important to use Herbal Cocktail to curb your appetitite and sugar craving, Fitness Regular as a fat blocker, and Fitness Plus as a fat burner.

The following strategies will help you manage your stress and balance your spirit effectively:

Manage Your Stress Effectively:

Psychological stress, if managed properly, can be motivating and beneficial.  The first step is to accept instead of resist stress.  Accept the fact that you are being challenged and that every challenge gives you an opportunity to grow and expand.   

Life is like school: before you can obtain a diploma or degree, you must be willing and able to do your homework and pass a series of tests.  The good news is that even if you fail, the universe will provide you with unlimited opportunities to go through the tests again and again until you past them!  Therefore, your clock is not ticking.  Time is irrelevant!

Follow the Emotion Releasing Technique instructions in Chapter 11 of Breaking the Yeast Curse: Food and Unconditional Love for Magic Healing, to release your psychological toxins and allow yourself to move on with your life with a clean slate.  Some self-administered techniques such as  self-hypnosis, meditation, prayers and affirmations can also be helpful in reducing stress physically and psychologically.  If psychological stress becomes paralyzing, then you should seek competent professional help.

Restore Spiritual Balance:

Spiritually speaking, we all chose our destiny when we were born into this life.  No matter what kind of life situation we are in, we are given an opportunity to prove that we have the strength, tenacity, wisdom and faith to overcome obstacles and excel. 

The only way to get out of the rut of a dysfunctional life situation is to exercise your unconditional love and wisdom.

Use the principles described in Chapter 11 of Breaking the Yeast Curse: Food and Unconditional Love for Magic Healing to understand, accept, forgive and release.  Once you can release the negative emotions toward those who have done you wrong, you can release the negative past that has been haunting you.  When you no longer carry the old baggage, you no longer carry the excess weight!  Love and respect yourself as the most unique, creative and miraculous person in the world.  If you cannot accomplish this on your own, seeking help from a spiritually-oriented, well-grounded therapist can be fruitful.

Exercise Daily:

One last thing I want to stress is the importance of exercising daily.  It’s common sense that exercise improves your blood circulation,  brings more oxygen to your body cells, burns calories, and generates endorphins.  Endorphins are natural hormones, and are considered as morphine from within.  Morphine is a pain killer.  If you experience stiffness or arthritic pain, exercise will reduce or eliminate the aches and pains.   From a psychological perspective, endorphins also gives you calm, high feelings.  Because these feelings don’t last, you need to exercise everyday to generate new supplies of endorphins.

You might say, “I don’t have the membership to a gym!”  You can exercise without a gym. You can do slow walking in your neighborhood or in a park for 30 minutes a day, or you may jog in place for 10 minutes a day to start.  When there is a will, there is a way! 

Your weight and health problems did not occur overnight.  Naturally, becoming trim and getting well takes time.  Only your complete understanding of the illness and wellness process, as well as commitment and patience, will bring you positive and permanent results!

In order to correct weight problems, you should learn to nourish your body and mind on a regular basis.  Getting and staying trim is a lifelong project.  No crash diets, injections, medications, or surgeries can achieve this purpose.  The following natural remedies have been confirmed by many of my clients as most cost-effective for weight control:

Yeast-Free Nutritional Program:

Excess weight is a very costly health problem which can be associated with life threatening conditions such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disorders, gallbladder disease and metabolic dysfunction.  Being overweight can negatively affect health, appearance, self-esteem, and even earning potential.  Some researchers estimate that each pound of extra fat can cost an executive $1,000 a year in income.

Causes of Overweight Problems:       

Major causes of being overweight include poor eating habits, yeast disorders, thyroid dysfunction, psychological stress and spiritual imbalance.

Poor Eating Habits:

As mentioned previously, an average American eats 120 pounds of sugar per year.  From birth to age 70, on the average, an American eats eight cows, nine pigs and 15,000 eggs.  A well-balanced diet should contain less than 20% fat, less than 20% protein and more than 40% complex carbohydrates.  Excess intake of fat, protein and sugar can turn into overstorage of fat.  Americans also tend to overeat or not to eat at regular hours.  Some skip breakfasts and others have big meals right before bedtime.  Irregular hours and portions can confuse your biological clock and jeopardize your metabolic function.

Yeast Disorders:

As described in previous articles, yeast disorders are misdiagnosed and improperly treated by most medical professionals.  In addition to all the symptoms from head to toe such as foggy mind, allergies, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), chronic fatigue, low enegy, immune deficiency, arthritis-like aches and pains, skin rash, vaginal yeast infections, male yeast infections, depression, anxiety, etc, a persistent overweight condition can be an indication that your metabolic function is being jeopardized by stubborn yeast disorders. 

Yeast can creep in to any part of your body, especially sites which are weak to begin with.  For instance, if your thyroid gland is weak, then opportunistic yeasts can particularly affect your metabolic function and cause further deterioration.  If yeast disorders are not corrected, the weight problem will persist.  Some clients complained to me that they gained weight even if they just drank water!  Even though they may not have been as innocent as they portrayed themselves to be, there is some degree of reality in their complaint.  The fact is that it is very difficult for them to lose weight, no matter how hard they try. 

Hypothyroidism:

Severe hypothyroidism manifests symptoms such as obesity, constipation, dry skin, cold intolerance, hair loss, puffy face and mental retardation.  Contributing factors include congenital and environmental causes.  The latter includes poor eating habits.  Constant excessive consumption of sugar causes overwork and exhaustion of the thyroid gland.  On top of it all, untreated yeast disorders will further weaken thyroid function.

Psychological Stress:

Some people manage to be in constant crises.  For those who are used to a dysfunctional behavioral pattern, they feel anxious or uneasy if their lives are peaceful.  Somehow they have to create a situation where there will be chaos, and thus their frantic behavior can be justified. 

People who are not able to manage stress effectively will usually indulge themselves in emotional eating.  Food is a symbol of love and comfort across cultures, especially for those who associate food with parental approval and attention.

Spiritual Imbalance:

Many overweight people suffer from spiritual imbalance because they carry a great deal of  “unfinished business” on their shoulders.  In most cases, they crave approval from their parents.   Some are angry and hurt because they were abused sexually, mentally or physically during their childhood.  The predominant emotions are anger, resentment, grief and regret.  Some even feel sorry for themselves and feel that their negative feelings are well justified.  Usually they are unclear about the purpose of their existences.  They tend to “live to eat,” instead of “eat to live.”

Q.        Do Dr. J’s Detox products contain Kelp? I was advised that including Kelp in my supplements would be helpful for me but through research I heard that too much could cause issues. Could you please let me know when you have a minute? Thank you!

A.         Our Herbal Detox program consists of Yeast-Para Control and Cleansing-Balance Tea.  Yeast-Para Control does contain a small amount of kelp that is an excellent source of natural iodine.  Given the fact that most Americans are iodine deficient, the amount of Atlantic kelp I put in the formula is bridging the gap.
