tinnitusAbout 36 million Americans are suffering from tinnitus (ear ringing).  Ear ringing is a symptom of underlying disease.  The symptom is not affecting Americans only; it also affects people from all ethnic backgrounds and geographical locations. From time to time, clients from countries other than the US with tinnitus approached me for consultation.  The symptom of ear ringing appears to affect people globally.

Typical symptoms of tinnitus include persistent humming, hissing, whistling, clicking, roaring, buzzing, or hearing your own heartbeats.  Causes for tinnitus are various.  It can be caused by exposure to loud noise such as concerts, machinery, and aircraft.  It can also be caused by injuries, side effects of medication, stress, ear and/or brain infections, high sodium intake, poor dietary habits, etc.

The treatment for tinnitus thus requires a holistic approach.  Through working with clients with tinnitus, I have found that the following natural remedies can be helpful to reduce or eliminate ear ringing:

1. Environmental Change:

If loud noise was the trigger, changing the environment or even changing careers may be a relief for temporary suffering.  For example, some of my clients chose not to be aircraft mechanics, or truck drivers anymore, and that helped to stop their symptoms.

2. Discontinue Use of Medication:

If anti-hypertensive medication or aspirin gives you the side effects of ear ringing, discontinue the medication.  These drugs dilate vessels, and might increase pressure in the ear.

3. Effective Stress Management:

Stress may cause all kinds of physical illness.  Usually, I will ask my clients with tinnitus, “What is that you don’t want to hear?”  Spiritually speaking, tinnitus is symbolic of shutting down the outside world.  Once I guided my clients to gain insight into their life situations and learn a better coping mechanism, their symptoms reduced to a minimum.  Prayers and meditation can help reduce the symptoms.  This is also the case even with head injuries.

4. Herbal Treatment for Ear and/or Brain infections:

Yeast and parasitic infections of middle and inner ears and/or brain are very common cause for ear ringing.  Our Herbal Detox Program (Yeast-Para Control and Cleansing-Balance Tea) is very effective to clear the infections and reduce/eliminate the symptoms.

5.  Anti-yeast Nutritional Program:

The American Tinnitus Association notes that dietary habit plays a role in triggering ear ringing symptoms.  The Association urges people to limit consumption of artificial sweeteners, sugar, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine.

When I put my clients on an Anti-Yeast Nutritional Program with no sugar, no dairy, no wheat, no yeasts, no alcohol, no caffeine, no nicotine, nor chemicals, their symptoms subsided.  (See more details in my yeast free cookbook: Healthy and Tasty: Dr. J’s Anti-Yeast Cooking.)  An Anti-Yeast Nutritional Program helps to prevent or limit the overgrowth of yeasts and parasites, which in turn limits the triggers of tinnitus.

6. Reduce Salt Intake:

According to the American Tinnitus Association, high sodium intake causes water retention and increases the pressure in the ear and thus triggers ear-ringing symptoms.  Restaurant food tends to be very salty.   Avoid using saltshakers as a habit.  This would also reduce your dependency on anti-hypertensive medication.

Ear ringing symptoms can be annoying and consuming, because they can impair your normal hearing ability, affect your sleeping patterns, and rob your efficiency of day-to-day functioning.  However, as described above, the effects of the symptoms can be minimized or eliminated.

Accept the imperfections

sweet toothQ.        I have a terrible sweet tooth, like the size of King Kong. How can I correct it?

A.        Sugar craving is one of the symptoms of yeast and parasitic infections.  When yeasts and parasites hook onto your mucous membranes and suck your nutrients, they scream, “Feed me more!  Feed Me more!” If you don’t know what’s going on, you just feed them with sugary food every time they scream for it.  If not treated properly, over eating sugar can evolve into diabetes or uncontrollable weight gain.

Follow these steps:

1)    Change your dietary habits
